Migraine
A Migraine is a type of headache characterized by recurrent attacks of moderate to severe throbbing and pulsating pain on one side of head. In Ayurveda migraine is described as Ardhaavabhedhaka.
CAUSES
- Neurovascular disease
- Gastro intestinal disturbances
- Suppression of natural urges
- Overnight awakening or sleep deprivation
- Stress
- Genetics
- Hormonal changes e.g drop in estrogen levels.
SYMPTOMS
- Prodrome occurs up to 24 hours before a headache attack. Symptoms include
- Mood changes
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulty in concentrating
- Aura takes place in 5 to 60 min before or during an attack. Symptoms are
- Muscle weakness
- Irritation in ears
- Change in vision
- Headache attack remains for 4 to 72 hours. Symptoms can be
- Vomiting and nausea
- One sided headache , that can be severe
- Sensitivity to sound , lights and smell.
- Postdrome remains no more than 48 hours. Symptoms are
- Difficulty in focusing
- Stiffness in neck
- Fatigue
Pathya (DO)
- Sleep well
- Don’t miss the meals or have meals at proper time.
- Add ginger in diet.
Aahara
- Oily substances-purana ghruta( old ghee)
- Dhanya- salidhanya, yusha
- Fruits –pomegranate ,lemon
- Liquids- coconut water, takra ,kanji
Vihara
- Exercise daily
- Do yoga and pranayama specially anulom vilom.
- Loose excess weight.
Apathya (Don’t )
- Don’t take dry foods.
- Excessive alcohol
- Don’t overuse painkillers
- Avoid stress, cheese and chocolates
- Avoid hunger and don’t delay eating
- Avoid excess AC exposure

AYURVEDIC THERAPIES
- NASYA- a panchakarma procedure which involves administering herbal oils or juice through the nose to treat urdha jatrugata vikaras like migraine.
- Vamana- a panchakarma procedure which involves therapeutic vomiting helpful for reducing kapha dosha in the body.
- Virechana- a panchakama procedure which involves detoxification of body and it is performed to reduce excess pitta dosha from the body through anal route.
- Shirodhara-this procedure involves the pouring of a stream of warm oil over the patient’s forehead.
